Yahoo! Unveils New SMS Based Service

Expanding its operations and presence in the India mobile market, Yahoo! India, today, unveiled its latest mobile-based service – oneSearch.

This new service looks to SMS as a means for mobile subscribers in India to search for information anytime with the help of their mobile phones. This new service is designed to provide consumers better results and instant answers at the normal premium SMS rates (varies from operator to operator).

The new service works on the short-code system and allows you to search for almost any content through Yahoo!'s 58242 short code. For example:

•SMS to 58242 with the city name (e.g. Mumbai) returns back the weather
•SMS to 58242 with the company name (e.g. Infosys) returns back the stock quote

Pranesh Anthapur, Chief Administrative Officer, Yahoo! India said, "India is one of the fastest-growing mobile markets in Asia. Yahoo! is committed to providing Indian consumers easy-to-use mobile products and services to help them access the Internet."

"By providing mobile consumers with instant answers for any search query sent via SMS, we are drastically improving the mobile search experience and will now expand our reach to almost all mobile users in the country." added Manish Dalal, Senior Director, Mobile Products, Yahoo! India.

This service apart from SMS also offers its existing oneSearch WAP product by introducing new content clusters including local business listings, flight status information and Yahoo! Answers content. This is in addition to other content clusters like web results, mobile web results, weather, news, finance, web images, and Flickr photos.

On being asked if Yahoo! Plans to introduce saved and personalized searches, we were told that this is an oft-requested feature and though it’s not available now, it is in the works and would definitely be unveiled in the future.

Nokia's S60 Touch Interface announced

Nokia is showing off their new S60 Touch Interface at the Symbian Smartphone Show today. Unlike their last attempt, this effort was demonstrated on a more Nokia-like concept device. The touch-interface supports haptic feedback and accepts both finger and stylus inputs depending upon the display technology used. Feast your eyes on the video after the break until all the details become available.

Update: The press release is out and with it, more information about the new S60 software: existing S60 3rd Edition apps will run on touch-enabled devices unmodified (but can be further enhanced, natch); generic proximity and light sensors supported; a UI Accelerator Toolkit enables "impressive" graphical effects; and Flash Video will be supported in the S60 web browser. Available to S60 device manufacturers "during 2008." A bit more specificity please, Nokia?

LG.Philips develops 2.4-inch a-Si LCD with 1mm bezel

LG.Philips is far from being a newcomer to the cellphone display realm, and while it claimed to have cranked out the "world's slimmest" LCD for mobiles around this time last year, it's now boasting about one with an uber-thin bezel. Reportedly, the outfit has conjured up a 2.4-inch a-Si TFT-LCD, which touts a 320 x 240 resolution and possesses borders of just one-millimeter. The display is based on its Narrow Bezel Technology, and it should start mass production of the panels sometime next year. Notably, no price was mentioned, but the firm did state that it planned on applying the same technology to "other models to expand its lineup of slim border products."

Get some more apple experience on Windows

Apple has introduced Safari3 for both mac and windows, the web browser which was exclusively for mac users until past. After itunes and qcik time, this is another application from apple which we can use in windows.Apple claims its web browser is twice as fast as firefox 2 and ie7,easy bookmark handling, better tabbed browsing, built in RSS(now both ie and firefox has this) and much more.
So theres one more contender in this web browsing competion, though i am a bit rellucant to say it may be better than firefox(i dont consider ie7 as much of competion personally).
After using firefox and safari together,i may say fiefox still rocks. The combination of keywords for shortcuts ,add ons is missing in safari.
Though i may be using safari now and then,i dont think so it would replace firefox as my primary web browser.
Download safari3 beta (for mac,windows XP,windows vista) from : http://www.apple.com/safari/download/

Yahoo! mail to go unlimited

Yahoo mail plans to go unlimited and plans to rollout this service in the coming months starting this may. This news comes as a big news for over 250 million users of yahoo email.Currently rediffmail offers unlimited storage, live mail offers 2gb and Google"s gmail 2.8 gb.But here also the drawback is that the attachment limit is still 10 mb.
Yahoo mail faces intense competition from gmail and microsoft's live email. While gmail is getting popular day by day for its ease of use and for being very user freindly, yahoo hopes to retain its existing users and more by giving them more and more additional features.Users will know that they have been pgaded when the limit counter has been removed.Though many people dont find it exciting as they want increased attachment limit and POP3 enabled
